Taking a look at these foldable pianos, let’s get into the practical details to understand what makes them better and where they may fall short. I’ve selected 5 that bring together different features. I must say that the information provided by manufacturers is very confusing. They use the words semi-weighted or weighted too liberally. I’ve had to do some detective work to show you what I believe are their actual characteristics. Although my intention is to save you as much time as possible in your decision. At the end, you have a table to compare some of their features. Let’s get down to business.

✅ Advantages: This piano stands out for its flexible design and portability, making it easy to take anywhere. When folded, it’s the size of a shoebox. Its Bluetooth technology makes it fun to learn with apps. It even has small stereo speakers! Additionally, it can be an excellent gift for children.
❌ Disadvantages: Although it doesn’t sound bad, the silicone keys can feel different to the touch. And crucially, its keys are not velocity-sensitive (you can learn more about this here). That is, they all sound at the same volume. I would rule it out unless your intention is simply to practice hand positioning and memorizing the score. Forget about practicing interpretation.

✅ Advantages: The advantage of this foldable piano is its authenticity with semi-weighted keys, providing an experience closer to a real piano. Additionally, its dual keyboard function is great for shared lessons.
❌ Disadvantages: Although it’s portable, its folded size can be a bit larger compared to other models. Its weight is also among the highest, but it’s a trade-off for the quality of the keyboard.

✅ Advantages: It probably has the best keyboard construction of the foldable pianos. Except for the feel, which seems to be that of a velocity-sensitive keyboard, the keys have the appearance of a digital piano.

❌ Disadvantages: For this price, you could buy a NON-foldable piano of higher quality and a recognized brand, but it would not be foldable. Its weight is much higher than the rest, but it’s the price to pay for having weighted keys. It’s somewhat unfair to criticize this.

✅ Advantages: It stands out for its compact and lightweight design, ideal to take anywhere. Its dimensions are reduced to one-fourth once folded. Despite this advantage, it doesn’t forgo the Bluetooth function and MIDI connection. Good sound.
❌ Disadvantages: Although they indicate that the keys are velocity-sensitive, it doesn’t seem so or is very limited. In addition, the appearance of the keys differs somewhat from those of a conventional piano, with shorter white keys, shorter and sunken black keys, and with a shorter overall key travel. It is above the roll-up keyboard in terms of approximation to a piano, but below the rest in terms of interpretation possibilities.

As I mentioned at the beginning of the article, I always believe this option is better than none at all. And now that we finally have a foldable piano with weighted keys on this list, the purchase is more justified than ever.
